Description:
The Microcomputer Systems Database User Certificate of Achievement presents basic computer use and terms, use of operating systems, and the Internet/World Wide Web with an emphasis on database application software. The student can choose depth with Access and Advanced Access or breadth with Access and FileMaker Pro.
The Certificate prepares students for employment in entry-level jobs requiring a general computer education in system software and application software, specifically database management software. Although there are no specific job titles, there are a wide variety of positions that the student might pursue. Database skills are valuable in any job requiring the management of a large amount of information such as managing client lists or organizing research data.
The student may not necessarily be employed in a technology industry, but rather support the maintenance and use of databases in any field. There is an opportunity for advancement from the entry-level position as skills are developed over time. The coursework from this certificate prepares the student to study other database applications such as SQL or Oracle or to learn to work with web-based databases.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of computer systems including hardware, operating systems, terminology and database management systems;
2. exhibit basic math and English skills while using database management software to create and document well-designed databases;
3. apply critical thinking, problem solving and traditional database normalization processes while developing database solutions; and
4. meet system information requirements by generating a variety of queries.
