Term Effective:
Fall 2008
Description:
The following course of study is recommended as the best choice to prepare future elementary teachers (K-6) for multiple subject teaching. This course of study satisfies the general education requirements for CSU and the core lower division preparation for a multiple subject credential simultaneously.
Multiple Subject Preparation for Liberal Studies (Teacher Preparation)
The Liberal Studies (Teacher Preparation) (Pre-Teaching) major is designed to provide the lower division preparation for multiple subject teaching in a self-contained classroom, usually in elementary schools grades K-6. The classes in this major align with the common core of courses accepted by a number of CSU campuses for multiple subject teacher preparation. Interested students are encouraged to work with a counselor to be certain of their course selection. Middle schools accept a multiple subject credential but require a supplementary authorization in an additional subject.
Single Subject Preparation for Middle School and High School
The single subject credential is for those who plan to teach a particular subject, usually in middle school or high school (grades 7-12). Students interested in single subject teaching should pursue the discipline they want to teach. Subject matter areas taught in public schools include English, Mathematics, Science, History, Economics, Physical Education, Art, Music, or Languages. Students preparing to teach in a single subject can complete Santa Rosa Junior College General Education patterns B or C.
There are three options for completing the major in Liberal Studies (Teacher Preparation):
- Completion of the Liberal Studies (Teacher Preparation) major outlined below.
- Completion of the Multiple Subject preparation for Sonoma State University (SSU)
- Completion of at least 45 units of lower division preparation for an integrated or blended multiple subject teacher preparation program at any California State University or University of California Campus.
For more detailed information or guidance about specific CSU campuses, check with your counselor.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
