Description:

The Web Site Development: ASP (Active Server Pages) Programmer Certificate of Achievement is designed to provide students with the skills needed to succeed in the field of Web site development as an ASP programmer.

ASP Programmers are responsible for making "interactive" portions of a Web site. This may include creating a shopping cart application, building pages from a database, or creating and processing feedback forms. Depending on the size of the project, the ASP programmer may also be responsible for the administration of the Web server and design of a Web database.

Understanding how ASP can be used to enhance a Web site is a key element of the program. The program stresses a thorough understanding of HTML, Visual Basic, ASP, SQL, Web server operating systems, the use of databases on the Web, as well as problem solving and debugging skills. Students will be expected to deliver Web based solutions to business requirements.

A successful ASP Programmer exhibits a strong work ethic, perfectionist standards, patience, strong people skills and shows an attention to detail. ASP Programmers are expected to design, program and test ASP code, as well as provide product support after the code is implemented.

This program stresses the practical application of Web development skills to "real life" projects. Students are expected to work in teams to create Web sites for non-profit organizations in Sonoma County. The ASP student would create all aspects of the site which require ASP code. The ability to work in a group, communicate with a client, resolve problems, meet deadlines, and understand the Web development cycle is just as important as understanding databases or creating ASP code. This hands-on approach ensures that as students complete the program, they will have practical experience, as well as working Web sites to feature in an electronic portfolio.

Possible job titles include: Web Programmers, ASP Programmers, ASP Developers, Web Developers, Web Programmer/Analysts, or Web Technical Developers.
