Description:
The Certified Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide Skills Certificate provides over 289 hours of lecture, skills lab, and clinical practice, and prepares students for work in skilled nursing facilities or residences. The program duration is 10 weeks, 4-5 days per week. Clinical hours are held in a skilled nursing facility. The program prepares students to take the competency examination for the Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide certificate issued by the California State Department of Health Services.
Nurse Assistants, as important members of the health care team, assist the nurse with the care of the patient in skilled nursing facilities or hospitals. They perform such duties as changing bed linen, dressing, grooming, bathing, assisting in and out of bed, taking vital signs and feeding patients. Home Health Aides care for elderly, convalescent, or handicapped persons in the home of the patient. They perform the above mentioned duties for patients including preparing meals and assisting with medications under the supervision of a Licensed Vocational Nurse, Registered Nurse, or physician.
Employment opportunities are available in skilled nursing and personal care facilities, hospitals, and residential care agencies. Many individuals find jobs through temporary staffing agencies and home health care services. The job outlook is very good for this field. Individuals interested in career advancement may pursue further study to become licensed vocational nurses, and then registered nurses.

Licensure Note:
The California State Department of Health Services has specific legal requirements governing the certification of Nurse Assistants and Home Health Aides. Criminal background screening must be completed and the student cleared of criminal convictions before he/she can be competency tested or certified by the State of California. All students starting the program must be fingerprinted.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this certificate, the student will be able to:
- Prove eligibility to sit for the competency examination for certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA), in the State of California; and
- function at the entry level of a CNA and HHA.

It is important that students who are completing an Associate Degree and desire to transfer to a four-year institution meet with a counselor to plan their lower division coursework. Notes:
Prior to starting the clinical portion of the program, students must submit documentation of a recent physical examination, current immunization records, and CPR certification. This is a requirement of the clinical facilities.
All courses must be completed with a C or better.
