Astronomy Observational Lab |
Description: | Observational laboratory in astronomy. Students will utilize small aperture telescopes, binoculars, star charts and planispheres. Constellation identification and terrestrial and celestial coordinate systems will be introduced. Short exposure and deep sky astrophotography will be conducted. In the case of inclement weather, students will utilize the planetarium, classroom, or computer lab to perform required labs. |
Prerequisites: | Course Completion or Concurrent Enrollment in ASTRON 3 OR ASTRON 4 |
Recommended Preparation: | Eligibility for ENGL 100 or ESL 100 and Course Eligibility for MATH 150 or appropriate placement based on AB705 mandates |

| This class will have a mandatory synchronous orientation via Zoom on Thursday, 8/31 from 6:30-8:00pm. The class will then meet in-person in Rm 2049 Lark Hall from 6:30-9:30pm on Wednesday 9/6 and in Rm 2039 on Thursday 9/7. There will also be required field trips to a Lake Sonoma observing site (you must provide your own transportation) from 6:00pm-1:00am on Friday, 9/8, Saturday 9/9, Friday, 9/15 and Saturday, 9/16. There will also be two additional mandatory synchronous Zoom meetings from 6:30-8:00pm on Thursday, 9/14 and Thursday, 9/21. This compressed class will have approximately 4 hours per week of online, asynchronous content. If any field trips are cancelled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, class may meet in an alternate location of Rm. 2009 Lark Hall, or alternate versions of the field trip activities may be completed asynchronously online instead at the instructors’ discretion. Course fee of $10 is required for necessary materials that will be supplied. This section will meet on 9/6 and 9/7 in the SRJC planetarium, room 2001, Lark Hall. This section may also meet in the SRJC planetarium on 9/8, 9/9, 9/15 & 9/16 in the event of inclement weather. |
