Description:
The Art: Sculpture Certificate of Achievement involves the study and manipulation of basic visual elements in space. The elements include form and space, mass, weight, balance, edge, color and surface texture. Students will study the various problems and potentials of sculpture. Students will create forms from shapes, explore themes and in-depth problem-solving, individual expression and experimentation with sculptural media, methods and materials.
Techniques such as plaster casting and stone carving, assembling mixed materials, building armature structures, texturing gypsum materials, hand tool use, power tool use, modeling clay figure studies, mold making and use of release agents, application of color and patina, and the safe handling of tools and materials are covered in this certificate program. Creating forms in wood, metal and cement are also covered in this course of study, as are shop safety and an introduction to the work of many artists working in sculpture.
The Fine Arts Certificates are designed to provide a broad-based education. Students earning the Certificate of Achievement in Sculpture can set up their own studios and sell their work in galleries or may work in fabrication and casting studios. They may also work making architectural models in an architectural firm. The certificate program gives a basis for possible internships and paid apprenticeships as a studio assistant, or for work in a museum or gallery.
Those pursuing careers in teaching at the elementary or secondary school level will enhance their abilities to teach art by competing this certificate.
Students earning certificates could be prepared for employment in a variety of entry-level positions, as mentioned above. Generally speaking, the average rates of pay are relatively low at the entry level, although rates of pay and availability of such jobs vary. Individuals wishing to pursue freelance careers need to be able to combine the regular practice of creative skills with self-promotion and good business practices. A bachelor's or master's degree in art or art history is required for most career positions in museums and galleries. For students interested in an Associate degree, an Art major is available. Program Student Learning Outcomes
Upon Successful completion of this certificate, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate appropriate use of art tools, materials, and processes;
2. demonstrate skills in visual analysis by identifying specific formal elements in works of art;
3. achieve greater awareness of global traditions;
4. synthesize and apply visual principles in works of art, and
5. create a portfolio of designs and sculptures.
