Description:
The Art: Printmaking Certificate of Achievement involves the study and practice of the principles of visual communication (line, shape, value, form, texture, space and composition) from a fine arts base. Students will develop original works, explore various concepts, utilize creative problem-solving, and refine printmaking skills. They will study the various problems and potentials of printmaking and will develop ideas and concepts in a variety of print media. Students will use a range of tools, techniques and materials to express their ideas, including etching, dry point, silkscreen, woodcut, linocut, collagraph, embossing, and monotype.
The Fine Arts Certificates of Achievement are designed to provide a broad-based education. Students earning the Certificate of Achievement in Printmaking can set up their own studios and sell their work in art galleries, or may work as freelance illustrators. The certificate provides the groundwork for training in the field of artist limited edition, hand-pulled prints. The program gives a basis for possible internships and paid apprenticeships as a studio assistant, or for work in a gallery or art supply store setting. More advanced printmaking students may progress to careers in the arts such as print curatorial work, or print dealing. Those pursuing careers in teaching will enhance their abilities to teach art by completing this certificate.
Students earning certificates could be prepared for employment in a variety of entry-level positions, as mentioned above. Generally speaking, the average rates of pay are relatively low at the entry level, although rates of pay and availability of such jobs vary. Individuals wishing to pursue freelance careers need to be able to combine the regular practice of creative skills with self-promotion and good business practices. A bachelor's or master's degree in art or art history is required for most career positions in museums and galleries. For students interested in an Associate degree, an Art major is available. Program Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate appropriate use of art tools, materials and processes;
- demonstrate skills in visual analysis by identifying specific formal elements in works of art;
- achieve greater awareness of global traditions;
- synthesize and apply visual principles in works of art; and
- create a portfolio of edition prints.
