The SRJC Symphonic Band is a large ensemble focused on the study, rehearsal, and public performance of classical and contemporary literature. Students in 30D are the most advanced players of a wind or percussion instrument, and as such they will have more accountability within the Symphonic Band. They may be called upon to play solos and/or to assist in the troubleshooting of problems specific to their instrument.

1. Perform effectively in a large college-level symphonic band with appropriate rhythm, pitch tone, technique, musicality, and professionalism.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Accurately interpret and perform college-level classic and contemporary symphonic band literature of greater difficulty with emphasis on phrasing and nuance.
2. Demonstrate technical proficiency in the performance of selected literature with emphasis on increasing dexterity, range, and dynamic control.
3. Demonstrate increased accountability through leadership responsibilities and/or solo assignments.
4. Accurately sight-read college-level symphonic wind band literature on a wind or percussion instrument with attention to dynamics, blend, balance, and phrasing.
5. Perform effectively with the ensemble in a public setting.
6. Evaluate and critically analyze their musical performance for future improvement.
Students repeating Symphonic Band will be able to:
1. Demonstrate greater technical achievement on their instrument.
2. Articulate musical phrases with greater clarity.
3. Perform with higher standards of intonation.
4. Demonstrate a more sophisticated comprehension of dynamics, phrasing, musical expression, and nuance.

Students repeating Symphonic Band will perform new literature each semester, building on both their skill level and knowledge of the repertoire.
Assignments:

1. Prepare assigned works for public performance in concert
2. Outside practice of their instrument (ungraded)
3. Participation in additional rehearsals, when called
4. Participation in concerts, tours, and other field trips as scheduled
5. Final exam will be a public concert
Repeating students will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
