XML Web Developer - effective Fall 1981

Description:

The XML Web Developer Skills Certificate is designed to provide students with the skills needed to succeed in the field of Web site design and development. XML Web developers are responsible for producing Extensible Markup Language (XML) for Websites. The training stresses usage of the Web as a platform to deliver solutions to business problems. Students will gain an understanding of the relevant Web technologies, the most common software and hardware products, the resources necessary to support a site, and the requirements of site maintenance. The curriculum provides a strong emphasis in HTML, XML, CSS, and Web site production techniques.

This program stresses the practical application of Web development skills on real life projects. Students are expected to work in teams to create Web sites for non-profit organizations in Sonoma County. The ability to work in a group, communicate with a client, resolve problems, meet deadlines, and understand the Web development cycle is just as important as understanding HTML or creating XML code. This hands-on approach ensures that as students complete the program, they will have practical experience, as well as working Web sites to feature in an electronic portfolio.

Web development careers include job titles such as Webmaster, Web Programmer, Web Content Developer, Web Site Artist, Web Engineer, and Web Database Administrator. Whatever titles are applied to the positions, the skills required seem to fall into the categories of design, programming, database integration, and system administration.

Course Prerequisites and Advisories:

Courses in a program of study may have prerequisites or advisories; that is, courses that must or should be completed before taking that course. Please check for prerequisites or advisories by clicking on the course numbers in the Program Requirements section.

It is important that students who are completing an Associate Degree and desire to transfer to a four-year institution meet with a counselor to plan their lower division coursework. While many majors at SRJC are intended to align with lower division major preparation required by California public universities, specific lower-division major requirements vary among individual campuses. See a counselor, visit the Transfer Center, and check Guides For Transfer in Specific Majors, and ASSIST to review transfer preparation guides for specific schools and majors.
