Description:
The Web Site Development: Perl Programmer Certificate of Achievement is designed to provide students with the skills needed to succeed in the field of Web site design and development. Perl programmers develop applications for Web sites. These applications range from simple server-side scripts to extremely complex database applications. Perl programmers may be employed as Web Programmers, Perl Programmer, CGI Developers, Perl Programmers/Analysts or Web Technical Developers. The training stresses usage of the Web as a platform to deliver solutions to business problems. Students will gain an understanding of the relevant Web technologies, the most common software and hardware products, the resources necessary to support a site, and the requirements of site maintenance. The curriculum includes basic programming concepts, organizing and managing data structures, HTML, CGI and UNIX.
This program stresses the practical application of Web development skills on real life projects. Students are expected to work in teams to create Web sites for non-profit organizations in Sonoma County. The ability to work in a group, communicate with a client, resolve problems, meet deadlines, and understand the Web development cycle is just as important as understanding HTML or creating CGI scripts written in Perl. This hands-on approach ensures that as students complete the program, they will have practical experience, as well as working Web sites to feature in an electronic portfolio.
Web development careers include job titles such as Webmaster, Web Programmer, Web Content Developer, Web Site Artist, Web Engineer, and Web Database Administrator. Whatever titles are applied to the positions, the skills required seem to fall into the categories of design, programming, database integration, and system administration.
