Description:
The Horticulture: Nursery Management Career Certificate program prepares students to advance to management positions in nurseries that propagate, grow and market plants for use in the home, business or the landscape. The program provides a solid foundation in plant knowledge and nursery and garden center environments, as well as computer applications and management skills. These skills and knowledge equip students to embark on a successful and rewarding career in the nursery industry. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and most courses incorporate lab activities that apply knowledge and skills in realistic settings.
The Horticulture: Nursery Technician Certificate program is designed as the most advanced level in the Nursery program. Students who have completed the Horticulture: Nursery Technician Competency Certificate will have fulfiled a portion of the Horticulture: Nursery Management Career Certificate.
The Horticulture industry, which involves the growing, selling, planting and servicing of plants and landscapes for human environments, is one of the fastest growing industries in America. The landscape industry in California is one of the state's largest industries. University studies have consistently found this dynamic, growing sector represents over $12 billion in sales and 130,000 employees. In addition, designed and maintained landscapes cover more than 1.6 million acres in California.
The landscape and nursery industry in Sonoma County has expanded dramatically in the last decade. Retail nurseries and full-service garden centers have seen substantial increases in sales from previous years, and new wholesale and retail nursery businesses are flourishing.
This industry-wide expansion has been accompanied by an increase in the demand for employees with the skills to operate, supervise and manage nursery operations. Men and women who possess nursery management skills find employment in full service garden centers, wholesale nurseries, and other entrepreneurial enterprises. Representative job positions include propagator, grower, inventory controller, field foreperson, field superintenent, general manager, sales manager, nursery or greenhouse manager, plant doctor, marketing director, shift supervisor and shipping foreperson. Students completing the Nursery Management Career Certificate are well prepared for rapid advancement within their chosen occupation.

It is important that students who are completing an Associate Degree and desire to transfer to a four-year institution meet with a counselor to plan their lower division coursework. While many majors at SRJC are intended to align with lower division major preparation required by California public universities, specific lower-division major requirements vary among individual campuses.
