Term Effective: Fall 2012

Description:

The Dance: Modern Dance Skills Certificate will give the student dancer an opportunity to present validation of his or her time, effort, and talent in dance. The certificate encompasses teaching, performing, and the choice of a dance style.

Modern dance expands the student's ability to use movement as a tool for self-expression and self-development. When properly grounded in the body's center (the torso), the student will experience an increase in kinesthetic awareness and sensitivity to the external/internal environment. Thus, movement of the torso off its center is greatly addressed in this style of dance. In modern dance the patterns of movement can be very rhythmic, quick, and shape oriented, or melodic, sustained, and flowing through shapes. The dynamic quality usually expresses some theme or emotion, often inspired by musical transitions.

The student who receives the Modern Dance Skills Certificate will have a better opportunity to obtain employment at dance studios and recreational classes, or work as a choreographer with community or school plays.

More information about the Dance program can be found at the Dance page on the Athletics Department website.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  2. display the skills and techniques necessary for employment as instructors, choreographers, and/or performers; and
