COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Incorporate theoretical principles from nursing fundamentals course, NRV 51, to demonstrate the planning and implementation of fundamental and basic medical surgical nursing skills for adult and gerontological clients.

2.  Apply infection control principles and standard precautions to the implementation of fundamental and basic medical surgical nursing skills.

3.  Demonstrate psychomotor competency in the performance of select fundamental and basic medical surgical nursing skills for the adult, mental health, pediatric and maternal child client.

 

Objectives:

Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.  Incorporate theoretical principles from the fundamentals/basic vocational nursing course into the planning and implementation of fundamental/basic medical surgical  nursing skills for simulated adult and gerontological patients.

2.  Apply infection control principles to the implementation of fundamental and basic medical surgical nursing skills.

3.  Use anatomical landmarks to perform physical assessments of simulated adult and gerontological patients.

4.  Compare and contrast assessment findings gathered in the examination of simulated adult and gerontological patients with physiologic norms [emphasis on well adult and gerontological patients].

5.  Demonstrate psychomotor competency in the performance of selected fundamental and basic medical surgical skills.

6.  Communicate therapeutically with adult and gerontological patients.

7.  Teach fundamental self-care skills to patients.

8.  Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions on adult and gerontological patients.

9.  Work cooperatively as a member of a team to ensure that all members achieve learning objectives.

10.  Prioritize assessments and interventions for adult and gerontological patients whose problems concern a single acute or sub-acute illness.

1.Introduction:

   a. Professionalism in simulated patient care

   b. Applying principles from the prerequisite courses

   c. Applying principles from the theory course

   d. Adapting skills to clinical patient care

   e. Skills related to nursing care of adult and gerontological client

   f.  Skills incorporating the conceptual and fundamentals of self-care

   g. Use of nursing process in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in basic nursing skills

2.Therapeutic communication in the nurse-patient relationship including clients with psychological disorders.

3. Learning teams and clinical teamwork.

4. Infection control:

   a. Standard precautions

   b. Special isolation precautions

5. Vital signs, pain scales, weights, and pulse oximetry.

6. Hygiene:

   a. Bathing

   b. Bed making

   c. Oral care

   d. A.M. and bedtime care

   e. Perineal care

   f. Special care needs of debilitated and dependent patients

7. Elimination:

   a. Enemas and suppositories

   b. Ostomy care

   c. Condom catheter application

Assignments:

1. Reading assignments: approximately 20-50 pages per week from skills textbook in preparation of practice.

2. View required skills demos via multi-media platforms.

3. Attend scheduled demonstrations.

4. Discuss textbook-instructor and instructor-instructor variations.

5. Practice skills as a member of a learning team.

6. Online pre-quizzes and case scenarios.

7. Demonstrate competency with a maximum of three attempts on the skills lab rubric criteria.

Methods of Evaluation/Basis of Grade.

Writing: Assessment tools that demonstrate writing skill and/or require students to select, organize and explain ideas in writing.		Writing 0 - 5%
Portfolio for skills and documentation of skills per case scenario.
This is a degree applicable course but assessment tools based on writing are not included because skill demonstrations are more appropriate for this course and this course includes essay exams that fulfil the writing component of the course.
