Students observe working interpreters, apply knowledge and technical interpreting skills learned in the classroom, and are observed and receive feedback from interpreter preceptors. Students interpret for special populations including trauma survivors, the elderly, mental health clients, and others.

ALTA Language Services English and Language of Service Proficiency Exams must be successfully passed before entering HCI 182. Immunization, TB clearances, and background check required for participation in externship.

2.  Complete effective, time-efficient pre/post conferencing and recordkeeping activities for interpreting encounters, focusing on standards of practice and analyses of skills and problem-solving related to specific interpretation experiences.

2. Perform preceptor-supported interpreter competencies in healthcare setting within the scope of practice and ethical standards established by the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA).
3. Apply conflict management and problem-solving skills in the healthcare setting.
4. Utilize culturally sensitive communication skills in the healthcare setting with providers and clients.
5. Develop skills for effective interpretation with special populations.
6. Apply self-care techniques.
7. Develop self-assessment techniques for personal strengths and challenges.

Assignments:

1. Review relevant pages (10-20) from required texts and other materials per week.
2. Complete a minimum of 20 healthcare interpreting encounters at a competent level within the standards of the CHIA in assigned healthcare setting. Skills evaluated by preceptor and instructor/language coach.
3. Keep weekly log of interpreting encounters. Submit encounter reports to preceptor as requested.
4. Analysis of logs and interpreting reports
5. Review glossary of relevant terminology in English & LOS with preceptor as requested.
6. Review community healthcare resource directory use with preceptor as requested.
7. Participate in instructor/language coach orientation and seminars, in group discussions and activities, and in pre/post interpreting sessions.
8. Participate in practical training (externship) in healthcare settings.
9. Complete forms in preceptor folder, including record of hours, interpreting encounters, pre/post interpreting sessions, other trainings and activities.
10. Meet with instructor/language coach/preceptor for final evaluation of seminar requirements, externship, and results of final role-play exam.
