COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Manage the jurisprudence and ethical issues facing dental hygienists in the delivery of oral health care, and develop a personal philosophy related to professional conduct, continuous quality assurance, self-assessment, and life-long learning.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of California State Dental Licensing agencies, the California Dental Practice Act and federal employment laws that address the employment of and practice of dental hygiene in California.

 

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Recognize and analyze the jurisprudence and ethical principles required when resolving ethical issues through the decision-making process.

2. Relate the ethical principles found in the codes of ethics, informed consent, patients' Bill of Rights and other documents to patient care.

3. Evaluate the legal responsibilities and scope of practice of the licensed dental hygienist under the California Dental Practice Act.

4. Discuss the ethical and legal responsibilities of reporting abuse.

5. Recognize and explain situations where malpractice might occur and discuss concept of risk management as it relates to the practice of dental hygiene.

6. Explain the role of the dental hygienist in the practice management of the dental practice.

7. Explain economic considerations related to the business practices in dentistry and the implications to the profession of dental hygiene.

8. Discuss professional competence, philosophy, demeanor, and employment opportunities when applying for a position.
