The students will study pathologies of the head, neck, and oral structures including developmental, genetic, systemic, bacterial, and viral diseases, along with neoplasms and temporomandibular disorders associated with oral conditions. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing deviations from normal, formulating and documenting a differential diagnosis. The students will gain knowledge to facilitate education, prevention, early detection, and referral of lesions of the head and neck region.
Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Course Completion of DH 74 and Concurrent Enrollment in DH 79

Acceptance to the Allied Dental Programs.
Students are accepted into a Dental Program through the application process and as a cohort and take courses in sequential order.

1. Formulate a differential dental hygiene diagnosis when observing diseases, conditions, and other deviations from normal affecting the oral cavity and head and neck region.
2. Determine appropriate referral, care planning, and health promotion strategies based on abnormal findings.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Define basic terminology relating to oral pathology and describe the clinical appearance of soft tissue lesions.
2. List and define the eight diagnostic categories that contribute to the diagnostic process.
3. Explain inflammation including clinical appearance and process of regeneration and repair in the body.
4. Describe injuries to the teeth and oral soft tissues.
5. Distinguish between the signs, symptoms, unique characteristics, etiology, and treatment of pathological conditions from inflammatory, immune, bacterial, fungal, viral, neoplastic, genetic, and systemic origins.
6. Define and describe developmental disorders and abnormalities for hard and soft tissues.
7. Identify and describe odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts.
8. Describe symptoms suggestive of temporomandibular disorder and explain clinical and radiographic manifestations and therapy for temporomandibular disorders.
