Infection control protocols established by the California Board of Dental Examiners and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be implemented.

1. List and evaluate roles and functions of the dental hygienist.
2. Describe the etiological and risk factors associated with periodontal diseases.
3. Describe and evaluate the appropriate records and documentation of periodontal assessments.
4. Describe uses and techniques of the different types of assessment instruments.
5. Describe uses and techniques of the different types of scaling instruments.
Clinical Objectives
1. Identify and demonstrate the operation and maintenance of the equipment in the dental treatment area.
2. Demonstrate the ergonomic principles of operator positioning, patient positioning, equipment positioning, and instrumentation.
3. Evaluate and record patient's vital signs, blood pressure, and respiration rates.
4. List clinical characteristics of healthy and diseased gingiva.
5. Demonstrate assessment skills designed to treatment plan with the goal of delivering comprehensive dental hygiene care.
6. Apply techniques of insertion, adaptation, angulation, and lateral pressure for assessment and scaling instruments.
7. Demonstrate professionalism for the learning environment, as well as for rendering patient care.
8. Apply infection control techniques for prevention of disease transmission.
