This is the first in a two-part series; the second part includes a practicum using baby simulators and visiting with medically fragile infants and their caregivers when available.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Explain the challenges of caring for a medically fragile infant, analyze problems associated
with, and provide solutions for caring for such infants.
Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Describe the basic physiologic, environmental, emotional, and medical needs of infants.
2. Describe normal development of the fetus and how it may be affected by prenatal factors
and/or prematurity/low birth weight.
3. Recognize common medical problems in premature infants, describe special problems, and
discuss treatment options and help for caregivers of infants with medical problems.
4. Describe the goals of developmental care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), as well
as criteria for discharge.
5. Describe consequences of prenatal influences and experiences during infancy on long-term
outcomes.
