Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:

1. Summarize the religious and ethnic requirements for sympathy work.

2.  Apply design theory to the design and creation of casket covers,

sympathy arrangements, sprays, and set pieces.

3. Utilize ribbon to enhance sympathy designs.

4. Properly prepare sympathy pieces for delivery.

5. Position and set-up floral displays at various sites.

6. Develop working relationships with mortuaries and cemeteries to

fulfill their needs and requirements while meeting the needs of family.

7. Discuss the principles of selling sympathy work.

8. Express empathy for the deceased's family while managing personal

feelings.

Assignments:

1.  Design lid pieces for casket lid; free-form and using different

   forms.

2.  Set up different kinds and sizes of easels.

3.  Design a flat spray.

4.  Design a standing spray.

5.  Design sympathy arrangements.

6.  Design casket cover for an open and closed casket.

7.  Field trips to mortuary and cemetery. Field notes: 2-3 pages per

   visit.

8. Portfolio: photos of design projects with accompanying journal entries

  listing materials and describing methods for each project.

8.  Final exam.

9.  Final project: Design, construct, and set up a complete funeral

   display.

10. Reading, 5 - 10 pages per week.
