A comprehensive study of Hazardous Materials, and emergency response to Haz Mat incidents.  Includes basic Haz Mat chemistry, regulation, toxicology, tactics and strategy of mitigation, decontamination, and scene management.  Students will receive a certificate in Incident Commander, and First Responder Operations Decon from CSTI.  This course is POST Certified.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

2.  Interpret the placard and labeling systems.
3.  Identify basic physical & chemical properties of Hazard Classes.
4.  Define the need for scene isolation, stabilization and scene control.
5.  Identify various methods of chemical ID and incident mitigation
   relative to the danger of the chemicals.
6.  Identify methods or evacuation procedures.
7.  Identify health dangers of the chemical classes.
8.  Demonstrate principles of decontamination.
9.  Identify federal & state laws and regulatins.
10. List the recording and reporting systems associated with Hazmat.

Topics and Scope

   A.  Define Hazmat as it pertains to an emergency response.
   B.  List agencies that are responsible for containment, and cleanup.
2.  Review of basic chemistry and physics.
   A.  List properties of commonly found hazardous materials that are
       transported by air, land, and sea.
3.  Special considerations.
   A.  Identify flammable and combustible liquids.
   B.  Identify compressed gases.
   C.  Identify flammable solids.
   D.  Identify oxidizing agents.
   E.  Identify significant poisons.
   F.  Identify radioactive materials.
4.  Scene management
   A.  Define and identify ICS for hazmat incidents.
