COURSE CONTENT
Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Define the job of a clothing alterationist.
2. Solve special problems in fitting and altering clothing for men's and
women's clothing.
3. Apply basic sewing skills to altering ready-made clothing.
4. Recognize various fabrics and be able to differentiate different
techniques to alter.
5. Compare and contrast the different techniques used in home sewing and
the ready-to-wear industry.
6. Formulate a plan for setting up a business, in a home or shopping
center.
7. Based on subsequent repeats, students will be able to apply techniques
to:
a. increasingly complex applications
b. increasingly complex patterns
c. fabric manipulation with a variety of fabric textures
d. increasingly complex fitting issues and adjustments
e. gain confidence and speed

Representative assignments:
1. Complete 20 alterations, such as hems, sleeves, waistlines, tapering
pants and skirts, and other individualized types of alterations.
2. Compile samples of various alteration techniques and hand stitches.
3. Performance exam, demonstrating skills.
4. Read approximately 10-20 pages per week from textbooks.
