A course covering various aspects of dentistry including restorative dentistry, esthetic dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, geriatric dentistry, oral/maxillofacial surgery, and new technology in dentistry. Students are exposed to how these various areas of dentistry are implemented in the general dental practice, how dental hygiene relates to each area, as well as how to make a referral to a dental specialist in the case of the difficult patient. Integration of dental concepts and comprehensive patient care in preparation for future collaborative practice between the dental hygienist and other health care providers is emphasized for each topic area.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

A.    Describe the variety of procedures practiced by the general dentist

     and the indications/contraindications for common dental procedures.

B.    Explain the considerations (psychological, social, financial) in

     developing a comprehensive treatment plan for dental care for a

     patient.

C.    Explain how the practice of dental hygiene relates to the patient's

     comprehensive dental treatment plan and ultimately to the patient's

     total well being.

D.    Interpret procedures listed on an example dental treatment plan in

     terminology that can be understood by a patient with no special

     knowledge of dentistry.  Explain that same treatment plan to a

     fellow dental professional in sufficient detail to collaborate

     dental hygiene care for that patient.

E.    List the recognized dental specialties: discuss the scope of each

     dental specialty practice and how each may interrelate with other

     areas of dentistry including dental hygiene.

F.    Discuss guidelines to be used in determining when it is appropriate

     to refer a patient for specialty care.

G.    Define the components of a smoothly functioning relationship between

     hygienist, general dentist, specialist, and patient.

H.    Assess the potential problem areas in the referral relationship and

     suggest ideas to prevent common problems.

I.    Explain to a theoretical patient why a referral to a dental

     specialist is being made and answer commonly asked questions

     regarding referral.

J.    Describe the advancements in the dental and medical sciences in

     short time periods and have skill in analyzing new technology based

     on the scientific method.

K.    Evaluate the variety of practice settings available to the dental

     hygienist and use this knowledge to promote career satisfaction and

     public service.

L.    Explain the concept of collaborative practice and the positive

     consequences this practice model has for the dental team and the

     patient.

M.    Diagram and discuss the  biologic width . Explain the complications

     associated with violation of the biologic width during restorative

     procedures, and offer options for  clinical care and/or correction

     of biologic width problem areas.

N.    Discuss the value of early diagnosis and referral in the specialty

     of orthodontics as it related to the plasticity during growth and

     development.

O.    Explain the difference between osseointegrated implants and

     encapsulated implants and why osseointegrationis preferred; include

     a discussion of how occlusal forces affect implants, and discuss the

     hygienist's role in the maintenance of implants.

P.    Discuss the subject of microultrasonic instrumentation (Holbrook

     technique), its uses, advantages, and disadvantages; include an

     explanation to patients as to why you might prefer to use this

     technique clinically.
