Catalog Description:

A comparative and historical analysis of society and individual behavior from a multicultural perspective.  An examination of U.S. American cultural groups and the various experiences and ideas that influence behavior.  This course will explore the experiences of at least three of the following cultural groups:  African, European, Asian, Latino and Native American. The relationship between personality development and culture, barriers to effective cross-cultural interaction and the development of communication styles will also be explored.


Recommended Preparation:
Eligibility for ENGL 100 or ESL 100.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

3. Analyze the biological aspects of cultural difference.

 A. Dimensions of identity and personality.
 B. DIE (Description, Evaluation and Interpretation).
 D. Components of culture, assimilation and acculturation.
 E. Biological factors influencing cultural identity.
 F. American culture and values, individuality and conformity.
 G. American ethnic cultures:  African, Asian, European, Latino and
    Native American.
III. Cross-cultural Interactions
 A. Introduction to concepts of ethnocentrism, prejudice and racism.

  values, cultural observations, comparing/contrasting culture
  groups, reaction paper to "Color of Fear" video, experiencing
  prejudice and communication styles.
2. Two essay examinations.
3. An oral reort on a cultural-specific reading.
4. A 5-page minimum research paper on a culture-specific group.
5. Oral presentation relating to research paper.
6. Final essay examination.
