COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

A.  Students will study designers of the 20th century.  As they inves-
tigate these designers, they will emphasize the following areas:
1.  The major lasting contributions each designer has made to the fashion
industry.
2.  Each designer's strategy for success in the competitive world of
fashion.
3.   Designers styles and how they have evolved during the course of their
careers.
4.  Personal history and background.
5.  Formal/informal education and job experience.
6.  Personal philosophy towards design and the fashion industry.
B.  Students will be able to recognize certain basic design elements and
analyze how the various designers adapted these elements into their own
personal style.
C.  Students will be able to compare and contrast various designers,
regarding their use of color, line, fabric, and silhouette.
D.  Students will be able to analyze present day fashions in terms of
how it draws from the classic designers of the early 20th century.

Topics and Scope

A.  Couture Houses of the French Fashion Industry from 1850 to the present
B.  European and American Designers from 1950 to present day.
C.  Young and as yet undiscovered designers who may be significant
   contributors to the fashion industry of tomorrow.

Assignments:

1.  Class assignments
2.  Chapter text questions
3.  Reference readings
4.  Fashion clippings
A term paper will also be required.
