COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Utilize fundamental concepts of music and apply them to the performance of beginning-level classical guitar literature.

 

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate proper right- and left-hand technique.

2. Demonstrate and utilize scales in the first position on the guitar.

3. Perform two- and three-part pieces from the standard classical guitar literature.

4. Sight read pieces of one-, two-, and three-part textures.

5. Perform with stylistically appropriate dynamics and tone coloration.

 

Students repeating Classical Guitar will be able to:

1. Demonstrate greater technical achievement in their performance.

2. Articulate musical phrases with greater clarity.

3. Demonstrate a more sophisticated comprehension of dynamics, phrasing, musical expression, and nuance.

4. Perform a more extensive repertoire.

Topics and Scope

I. Instrument Fundamentals

    A. Care and maintenance of the guitar

    B. Tuning

    C. Proper posture and playing position

    D. Basic right-hand techniques

         1. Apoyando (rest stroke)

          2. Tirando (free stroke)

    E. Basic left-hand position and techniques

II. Fundamentals of Music Notation

    A. Rhythm notation and rests

    B. The notes in first position to the fifth fret

    C. Whole and half steps

    D. Sharps and flats

    E. Key signatures and scales

         1. The chromatic scale

         2. Major scales

         3. Relative minor scales

 

Lecture/Lab-Related Topics and Scope:

I. Dynamics and Tone Coloration

II. Repertoire and Performance

     A. Study of music from different style periods

    B. Progression from one- to three-part pieces

    C. Solo and ensemble performance

III. Guest Artist Performances (when possible)

 

Students repeating Classical Guitar will perform new literature each semester, building on both their skill level and knowledge of the repertoire.

Assignments:

In-Class Assignments (Lecture/Lab-Related Assignments):

    1. Weekly demonstration of performance skills

    2. Preparation of repertoire and exercises as assigned

    3. Quizzes on course material (1-3)

    4. Performance of pieces studied

    5. Final performance exam

 

Out-of-Class Assignments:

    1. Regular practice of all course material and repertoire (ungraded)

    2. Listening assignments and/or concert attendance may be required

 

Students repeating Classical Guitar will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
