At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Identify central themes and concerns relevant to understanding the dynamic interactions among gender, race and ethnicity in the United States.  
2. Describe and apply principles of literary analysis to a variety of literature by and about ethnic Americans, considering culture, subtext and context.
3. Articulate the major theoretical and analytical issues relevant to understanding an ethnic group's unique experience in the United States.

1. Articulate the historical, political, psychological, social, and cultural issues that inform the
    literature.
2. Analyze the effects of the literary techniques used in the works.
3. Write critical analysis and response papers about various ethnic American literatures.

Topics and Scope

This course will focus on the experience of at least three US ethnic groups.  Ethnic groups include: Native American, Asian American, African American, Latino American, Pacific Islander American, Middle Eastern American, European American, and Multi-ethnic American.
I. Historical Contexts
    A. Literary traditions, including ancient tales and oral traditions when applicable
    B. Artistic traditions
    C. Social traditions, including family, gender, and community structures
    D. Political and economic traditions, including distribution of power and wealth, colonization
         and imperialism
II. Contact
    A. Push/pull factors
    B. Liminality
    C. Reception: racism, classism, oppression, assimilation, acculturation, colonization, and
         power-dynamics 
III. Forging Ethnic Identities
    A. Emergent and evolving literary traditions
    B. Emergent and evolving artistic traditions
    C. Emergent and evolving social traditions
    D. Emergent and evolving political and economic traditions
IV.  Contemporary Trends in Literature (at least one required)
    A. Intersectionality and positionality
    B. Exploration of place
    C. Literary criticism
V. Theoretical Perspectives (at least one required)

1. Read up to 50 pages per week, such as literary works, background readings in history,
    anthropology, and the social sciences

5. Write close literary analyses essays (two to four papers, 1,000-2,000 words each) (4000 words
    for the semester) of selected works so as to appreciate the distinctive narrative and
    poetic characteristics of ethnic tradition
