Students will discuss the legal considerations in assisting during emergencies, learn to recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of emergencies and procedures to prevent escalation of emergency situations, study the management of medical emergencies, and learn about drugs and equipment utilized in an emergency.

1. Evaluate a patient's general health to prevent anticipated emergencies, recognize the signs and symptoms, and initiate the appropriate early management of common medical emergencies potentially occurring in a dental setting.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Apply theoretical knowledge base and critical thinking skills in the prevention, identification, and/or response to common medical emergencies in the dental setting.
2. Describe the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies.
3. Obtain and interpret a completed medical history to thoroughly evaluate a patient's general health.
4. Record, evaluate, and monitor vital signs for indication of treatment modifications needed for each patient.
5. Identify and compare predisposing factors placing patients at greater risk for medical emergencies, including vital signs and assessments based on the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification system.
6. Communicate effectively during interactions with the emergency health care providers and patients.
7. Recognize and prepare the items commonly found in a basic emergency kit and operate the equipment necessary to manage a medical emergency.
8. Use a team approach to prepare the dental team for the appropriate management methods during simulated medical emergencies.
9. Describe the legal and ethical considerations and responsibilities of the dental team in the management of emergency situations.
10. Demonstrate the utilization of information found in an online dental drug reference source in relation to health history and treatment planning for stress reduction protocol.
