1. Perform many standard compositions of the jazz idiom ("standards") with appropriate interpretation.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Perform approximately 32 songs from the standards repertoire.
2. Interpret melodies in jazz, pop, and Latin styles.
3. Improvise over the chord progressions of standard tunes.
4. Create chord voicings and bass lines (rhythm section players).
5. Perform standards from memory using authentic interpretation and improvise
melodic lines over their chord progressions.
Topics and Scope

The curriculum of this course is approximately 32 standard compositions ("standards") from the jazz repertoire. Each class session will be dedicated to the study of these works. In order to assimilate this material, the following elements of each composition will be examined:
1. Historical Context, Associated Artists, and Typical Keys of the Standard
2. Harmonic Analysis of the Chord Progression
3. Scales and Arpeggios Needed for Improvisation
4. Creation of Piano and Guitar Voicings for the Given Chord Changes
5. Creation of Stylistically Appropriate Bass Lines
6. Techniques for Memorization of Selected Standards
Assignments:

1. Study and practice two assigned compositions per week, including melodies, improvisation, chord voicings, and bass lines as appropriate.
2. Listen to definitive recordings of assigned compositions.
3. Practice scales and arpeggios used in performance.
4. Memorize four selected compositions for solo performance.
5. Final exam will be an in-class performance.
