COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Recognize the role of the dental hygienist within a community setting as a health care

    provider, educator, and consultant, and to provide assistance to community groups

    and individuals seeking access to public dental services.

2.  Describe the use of biostatistics in oral epidemiology in the development of community based

    dental programs.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

1.   Discuss the role of the dental hygienist in the public health system.

2.   Describe the major oral health problems and the extent to which they affect the population.

3.   Identify social, cultural, economic, and political factors influencing oral health problems.

4.   Describe preventive measures that can be used in a community to reduce or control the major

      oral health problems.

5.   Discuss ways in which members of a community currently receive oral health care and other

      health services, including privately and publicly funded services.

6.   Discuss future trends in the delivery of health care and manpower utilization as they relate to

      meeting community oral health needs and demands.

7.   Assess, by means of indices, surveys, questionnaires, interviews and other means, the oral

      health needs of a target group.

8.   Design a program that includes results and interpretation of a needs-assessment survey for a

      target group.  

9.   Develop and present a dental learning unit to school-age children

10. Summarize a community service learning experience in measurable terms.

11. Compare and contrast dental public health and private practice.

12. Explain the dental hygiene process of care used in a community setting.

13. Discuss epidemiology and how it relates to dental caries and periodontal disease, including

      agent, host and environmental factors.

14. Utilizing epidemiology in conjunction with the statistical and research methods, compare

      specific defined populations.

15. Explain the demand for utilization of and barriers to dental services for different population

      groups.

16. Identify the various methods of financing dental care.

17. Discuss the impact of the fluoridation issue on society.

18. Evaluate and analyze dental literature.

19. Create a strategy and lesson plan for field visits to specific groups in the community.
