At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate advanced dental hygiene clinical competency in: the management of medicolegal
issues, synthesizing information, health promotion, formulation of a comprehensive dental
hygiene care plan, and the evaluation of patient treatment in the provision of comprehensive
dental hygiene care (competent level).
2. Apply appropriate medical and dental precautions in patient treatment; determine proper
precautionary procedures including consultation and referral) and apply those procedures
during treatment (competent level).
Objectives:

Students will be able to:
1. Establish dental hygiene treatment/care plans through the use of advanced case studies.
2. Perform appropriate advanced preventive procedures on a variety of patients.
3. Demonstrate advanced instrumentation and techniques utilizing hand-powered and ultrasonic
scaling devices.
4. Perform advanced techniques used to detect and remove plaque, calculus, and altered
cementum from unattached tooth surfaces using advanced instrumentation.
5. Perform advanced dental hygiene skills: scaling and root planning, administration of local
anesthesia, nitrous-oxide, the placement of occlusal sealants, fluoride therapy, and interpret
images on a variety of patient classification.
6. Perform dental hygiene services for patients at off site rotations.
7. Demonstrate the adjunctive procedure soft tissue curettage.
8. Demonstrate a continued high level of professional and ethical conduct with patients,
students, faculty and staff.
9. Demonstrate proficiency in the management of advanced patient care.
10. Demonstrate the ability to perform advanced patient care.
