Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Apply the principles of dental hygiene practice as they relate to general dentistry and the dental specialties.
2.  Discuss the scope of practice of the dental specialists and the Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice.
3.  Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication skills to discern and manage the legal and ethical issues associated with dental hygiene referrals to a dental specialist and in coordinating patient care with other healthcare professionals.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. List the dental specialties and scope of each as recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).
2. Explain how the principles of dental hygiene relate to each specialty.
3. Discuss the importance of a treatment plan in all types of dental practices, and describe the examination and diagnostic techniques used for patient assessment in each specialty.
4. Discuss the importance of the patient's medical-dental history and explain its relevance to general and specialty dental treatment.
5. Identify the types of services that a commercial dental laboratory provide for general dentistry and each of the dental specialties.
6. Describe the scope of practice of the periodontist.
7. Provide an overview of periodontal therapy.
8. Provide an overview of endodontic therapy.
9. Describe surgical endodontics and how it effects treatment.
10. Describe the scope of practice of an oral maxillofacial surgeon.
11. Describe surgical procedures typically performed in a general and surgical practice.
12. Describe the postoperative care and possible complications of oral surgery.
13. Describe an overview of a pediatric dental practice.
14. Discuss specific behavioral techniques that work with children and provide positive reinforcement.
15. Discuss the importance of preventive dentistry in pediatrics.
16. List the type of procedures that are performed for the pediatric patient compared with those performed to treat patients with permanent teeth.
17. Describe the environment of an orthodontic practice.
18. Discuss corrective orthodontics, and describe the treatment involved.
19. List the types of diagnostic records that are used to assess orthodontic problems.
