COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Identify, contextualize and discuss the sociocultural and aesthetic values of representative works from African visual arts, drama, music, literature, philosophy and religion within a global perspective.
2.   Compare and contrast the beliefs and values of selected African civilizations as revealed through their artistic and literary records.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Analyze representative works from specific African cultures and describe their distinguishing characteristics within their cultural contexts.
2. Discuss the ideas, beliefs, and values communicated in artistic expressions of at least three African cultures.
3. Compare, contrast and evaluate specific African ideas, beliefs and values with specific Western ideas, beliefs and values.
4. Analyze sociopolitical concerns as reflected in literature and the arts.
5.  Demonstrate the ability to compare, contrast and link cultural expressions of the various disciplines of the African humanities including mythology, literature, visual arts, film, theater, music, dance, religion and philosophy.

Topics and Scope

The course must cover at least three distinct geocultural areas on the African continent.
 
The course may be arranged chronologically or by period, geographically or by region, thematically or by major forms of expression including but not limited to mythology, literature, visual arts, film, theater, music, dance, religion and philosophy.
 
Topics include but are not limited to:
I. Traditional practices in the artistic life of African nations.
II. Tragedy and comedy in performing arts and film.
III. Central ideas and beliefs associated with the religious, political and philosophical practices in Africa.   
IV. Styles of African visual arts such as representative visual arts including the origins of developed African art.
V. African literature, myths and legends
     A. Representative African literary texts
     B. Contemporary African writers
VI.  Roots of African music and its influence in the West and other geocultural areas.
VII. Cultural borrowings and interactions between Africa and the West
    A. Impact of European Imperialism on the African Humanities
    B. Ways in which Africa was changed by European contacts, including decline, replacement,  modification, assimilation and renewal.
    C. Impact of Islam on African culture, language and the humanities.

Assignments:

Assignments will include:
 
1.  Reading analysis of assigned texts to establish cultural context, 50-150 pages of reading per week.
2.  Examinations, including quizzes, mid-term, final, and/or take-home exams.
3.  1-2 term papers (1250 to 2500 words), 4-6 essays, (500 to1000 words). Students may be asked to analyze  representative works of literature, visual art, music, and philosophical/religious thought and to compare and contrast, examine ideas, values and beliefs, and integrate materials from more than one discipline.
 
Other assignments may include participation in cultural activities; in-class projects; online activities; field trips.
