Demonstration and supervised practice of intermediate vocational nursing: adult/geriatric, maternal-child, pediatric skills based on scientific principles and concepts from theory. Concepts related to mental health and growth and development will be integrated into skills. Planning and implementing intermediate adult/geriatric, maternal-child, and pediatric patient care are done in the simulated clinical setting relevant to steps in the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementing, evaluation and documentation. Students will practice and demonstrate skills in the lab setting prior to the assignment of these skills in the clinical setting.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Incorporate the theoretical principles from intermediate med-surg and maternal-child nursing courses: NRV 51, NRV 5
2. 1 and NRV 52 to demonstrate the planning and implementation of intermediate skills for adult/gerontological, pediatric and maternal-child clients.
Apply infection control principles and standard precautions to the implementation of intermediate nursing skills for the adult, gerontological, pediatric, and maternal-child client.
3. Demonstrate psychomotor competency of select intermediate and more complex nursing skills, including that of mental health, for the adult/gerontolgical, pediatric and maternal child client.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Incorporate theoretical principles from the fundamentals/basic medical surgical skills course into the planning and implementation of intermediate nursing skills for adult, maternal-child, and pediatric patients.
2. Use anatomical landmarks to perform physical assessments and implement therapeutic procedures for adult, maternal-child, and pediatric patients.
3. Demonstrate psychomotor competency in the performance of selected intermediate skills.
4. Communicate therapeutically with adult, maternal-child and pediatric patients including those with mental health issues.
5. Teach fundamental self-care skills to patients and parents of pediatric patients.
6. Plan and implement preoperative and postoperative care.
7. Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions on adult, maternal-child, and pediatric patients.
8. Work cooperatively as a team member to ensure that all members achieve learning objectives.
9. Adapt procedures to meet patients' needs.
