COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Identify conditions in the oral cavity as they relate to the formulation of a comprehensive dental hygiene care plan to provide treatment that includes preventative and therapeutic procedures, and promotes and maintains oral health using patient centered, evidence based goals.

2.  Provide planned educational services using appropriate interpersonal communication skills and educational strategies to promote optimal health.

3.  Apply appropriate medical and dental precautions in patient treatment; determine proper precautionary procedures including consultation and referral) and apply those procedures during treatment.

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Apply current emergency procedures whenever necessary for the patient's well-being.

2. Implement infection control procedures as recommended in the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines for Infection Control in Dentistry.

3. Integrate and perform all aspects of dental hygiene care on a variety of patients at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) dental hygiene clinic. Care will include assessment procedures, recording of findings, dental hygiene treatment planning, preventative procedures, therapeutic procedures, adjunct therapies, and follow-up care.

4. Obtain and record patient medical, dental, and dental hygiene histories.

5. Perform and record findings from extra and intraoral examinations.

6. Conduct and perform accurate periodontal and restorative examinations.

7. Set-up and operate the intraoral camera for patient care.

8. Recognize normal and abnormal conditions as viewed on radiographs.

9. Obtain consultation for further medical or dental clarification when indicated.

10. Establish dental hygiene treatment/care plans through the use of case studies.

11. Perform appropriate preventative procedures on a variety of patients.

12. Determine, select, and use the proper instrumentation procedures used in oral prophylaxis procedures, initial periodontal preparation, and periodontal maintenance therapy on patients.

13. Demonstrate the ability to perform instrumentation utilizing ultrasonic scaling devices.

14. Detect and remove plaque, calculus, and altered cementum from unattached tooth surfaces.

15. Perform the following skills: scaling and root planing, administration of local anesthesia, the placement of occlusal sealants, fluoride therapy, and interpret images.

16. Perform dental hygiene services for patients at extramural clinical sites.

17. Demonstrate a high level of professional and ethical conduct with patients, students, faculty, and staff.

18. Demonstrate proficiency in the management of patient care.
