This course will include instruction on all aspects of companion animal (feline and canine) surgery with emphasis on the role of the technician. Canine and feline dental care including disease progression, prevention, and treatment will be discussed.  Topics in this course will cover all aspects of the surgical experience including patient preparation, sterile technique, common surgical procedures, instrument identification and care, and patient recovery.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1)    Describe surgical protocols and explain them to clients.
2)    Evaluate and prioritize surgical procedures, anesthetic risks, and anesthetic monitoring activities.
3)    Identify surgical and dental instrumentation.
4)    Describe appropriate surgical instrument and surgical suite preparation .
5)    Describe and evaluate sterile protocols including patient, surgeon, assistant and surgical suite preparation.
6)    Describe common surgical procedures and explain them to clients.
7)    Evaluate and complete proper surgical medical records.
8)    Describe dental anatomy, pathogenesis of periodontal disease, and common dental procedures.
9)    Evaluate and describe post surgical monitoring and after care procedures.
10)  Perform simple interrupted skin sutures and describe other common suture patterns.
11)  Evaluate suture material and indentify appropriate use of suture instrumentation and suture selection.
12)  Evaluate and describe proper protocols for IV catheter placement, use and monitoring.
