The Vocal Jazz Ensemble specializes in a cappella and accompanied performance of traditional and contemporary vocal jazz works. Importance is placed on ensemble musicianship, singing without a conductor, microphone technique, stage deportment, vocal improvisation, and backing up a soloist. The emphasis for 24A is on the development of sight-reading and accurate vocal pitch.  The ensemble performs both on-campus and off-campus community concerts each semester.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1.      Sing college-level vocal jazz works in public performance.
2.      Interpret the rhythmic and stylistic elements of jazz through vocal performance.
3.      Sight-read his/her assigned vocal line accurately at an elementary level.
4.      Demonstrate choral skills including blend, intonation, and pitch memory at an elementary level.
5.      Improvise vocal lines in a jazz style at an elementary level.
6.      Demonstrate professionalism through regular attendance at rehearsals and concerts, punctuality, preparedness, appropriate concert attire, and general demeanor.
 
Students repeating Vocal Jazz Ensemble will be able to:
1.      Demonstrate greater technical achievement in their vocal performance.
2.      Demonstrate development in vocal range, intonation, and stylistic dexterity (i.e. dynamics, phrasing, musical expression, improvisation, tone color).
3.      Demonstrate greater skill in sight-reading.
4.      Perform a more extensive repertoire.

Students repeating Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform new literature each semester, thus increasing their skill level and enhancing their knowledge of the repertoire.

Assignments:

1.      In-class rehearsal and preparation of assigned works.
2.      A minimum of one hour of outside practice per week is required for each hour of rehearsal.
3.      Listening assignments: famous recordings of notable jazz singers and vocal jazz ensembles.
4.      Attendance and participation at sectional rehearsals when scheduled.
5.      Participation in concerts, tours, and other field trips as scheduled.
6.      Final exam will be a public concert.
 
Students repeating Vocal Jazz Ensemble will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
