COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.       Perform effectively in a symphonic band.
2.       Accurately execute written articulations.
3.       Effectively interpret phrasings based on implied elements including meter, note grouping, melodic direction, and juxtaposition of tension/repose.
 

Objectives: Untitled document
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1.      Accurately interpret and perform college-level classic and contemporary symphonic band literature with proper characteristic tone, endurance, and control of dynamic range.
2.      Demonstrate technical proficiency in the performance of selected literature with emphasis on increasing dexterity and control of articulation.
3.      Sight read college-level symphonic band literature on a wind or percussion instrument with increased accuracy, including attention to dynamics and articulation.
4.      Interpret unwritten phrasings through analysis of musical elements and what they imply
5.      Perform effectively with an ensemble in a public setting.
6.      Evaluate and critically analyze their musical performance for future improvement.
 
Students repeating Symphonic Band will be able to:
1.      Demonstrate greater technical achievement on their instrument.
2.      Articulate musical phrases with greater clarity.
3.      Perform with higher standards of intonation.
4.      Demonstrate a more sophisticated comprehension of dynamics, phrasing, musical expression, and nuance.
5.      Demonstrate greater skill in sight-reading.
6.      Perform a more extensive repertoire.

Topics and Scope

I.      Advanced technical study including increased range, increased agility, control of articulation, and control of intonation in extremes of range.
II.     Sight-reading of college-level literature for symphonic band.
III.    Rehearsal and public performance of classic and contemporary works for symphonic band.
IV.    Study of particular technical challenges specific to the literature studied.
V.     Wind instrument articulation techniques specific to the literature studied.
VI.    Special challenges in intonation and blend in the performance of the literature studied.
VII.   Phrasing and interpretation beyond the written instructions based on note grouping, melodic direction, and juxtaposition of tension/repose.
VIII.   Differences in musical style specific to the literature studied.
IX.     Critical analysis and comparison of the different artistic goals specific to the literature studied.
X.       Performance etiquette and proper performance attire.
 
Students repeating Symphonic Band will perform new literature each semester, building on both their skill level and knowledge of the repertoire.

Assignments:

1.  A minimum of one hour of outside practice per week is required for each hour of rehearsal.
2.  Prepare designated works for public performance in concert.
3.  Final exam will be a public concert.
 
Students repeating Symphonic Band will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
