COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Speak extemporaneously in Spanish in such contexts as: business, travel, and

     family life.

2.  Utilize basic intermediate-level Spanish grammar and vocabulary needed to

     interact in everyday situations.

3.  Identify the main ideas expressed in spoken Spanish by native speakers on

     topics related to society, current affairs and notable personalities.

Topics and Scope

Content and topics will reflect intermediate communicative skills required

to function in social, academic and career-related situations.

1.  The language of common social relations.

2.  Common modes of expression - all arising from specific situations that might

      occur in business, leisure, shopping, the dinner table, travel, etc.

     a. making plans

     b. negotiating problems

     c. describing people, places, things and circumstances

     d. expressing preferences

     e. imagining and speculating

     f. communicating feelings, questions, doubts

3.  Narration of personal experience, witnessed events and news events.

4.  Cultural phenomena of the Spanish-speaking world from historical events to arts and

     entertainment.

5.  Narrative tenses, comparatives, pronouns, commands and overview of the

      subjunctive mood.

Assignments:

The following represent typical assignments for the Spanish 50C course:

1.  Role-plays on very specific interpersonal situations.

2.  Interviews to obtain information from Spanish speakers.

3.  Weekly pair and small group discussions and problem-solving.

4.  Weekly web-based exercises in listening comprehension, summarizing and interpreting

     authentic Spanish-language material.

5.  Presentation of original speeches and skits.

6.  Preparation for weekly vocabulary quizzes.

7.  Written grammar and syntax exercises.

8.  Final exam.

Methods of Evaluation/Basis of Grade.

Writing: Assessment tools that demonstrate writing skill and/or require students to select, organize and explain ideas in writing.		Writing 10 - 20%
