This course is designed to integrate the concepts of general dentistry and five of the dental specialties into the practice of dental hygiene. The student will learn how to collaborate with general dentists and specialists in the following fields: endodontics, oral maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatrics, and prosthodontics. Students will learn how to recognize oral conditions that could indicate the need for a referral. Students will be exposed to various types of technology unique to each specialty.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. List the dental specialties and scope of each as recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).
2. Explain how the principles of dental hygiene relate to each specialty.
3. Discuss the importance of a treatment plan in all types of dental practices, and describe the examination and diagnostic techniques used for patient assessment in each specialty.
4. Discuss the importance of the patient's medical-dental history and explain its relevance to general and specialty dental treatment.
5. Identify the types of services that a commercial dental laboratory provide for general dentistry and each of the dental specialties.
6. Discuss the indications and contraindications for amalgam restorations.
7. Discuss the indications and contraindications for composite restorations.
8. List the indications and contraindications for a fixed prosthetic.
9. List the indications and contraindications for a removable prosthetic.
10. Discuss the factors influencing the choice among full crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneer crowns.
11. Describe the conclusions of the subjective and objective tests in endodontic diagnosis.
12. Provide an overview of endodontic therapy.
13. Describe surgical endodontics and how it effects treatment.
14. Describe the scope of practice of an oral maxillofacial surgeon.
