Outcomes and Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Classify plants based on the binomial method of plant nomenclature.
2. Identify a range of native and exotic plants by leaf, bark, flower, fruit, and growth habit.
3. Describe the growth habits and soil and water requirements of different plants.
4. Assess and select plants according to desired function, growth habits, climate, exposure, and maintenance requirements.
5. Assess and recommend cultural practices for plants in the landscape.
6. Assess and recommend plants for landscaping purposes to provide desired foliage, flower, and form characteristics.
7. Evaluate and recommend plants suitable for water efficient landscapes.
8. Use plant keys to identify specimens.
9. Demonstrate proper plant materials collection and preservation methods.

1.  Written report (2-3 pages) and oral presentation on selected plant or plant group.
2.  Construction of plant care/information signs and labels for SRJC nursery.
3.  Participation in horticulture program plant sale activity.
4.  Collect and label field samples of 20 new plants per week.
5.  Memorize botanical names for 20 new plants per week.
6.  Sight identify specimens of 20 new plants per week.
7.  Write and correctly spell botanical and common names for 20 new plants per week.
8.  Quizzes (7), midterm, and final exam covering plant identification and cultural requirements.
9.  Reading: 15 - 20 pages per week.
