Demonstration and supervised practice of advanced vocational nursing skills of scientific principles and concepts from co-requisite theory. Planning and implementing advanced patient care in a simulated clinical setting relevant to steps in the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting. Students will demonstrate competent skills prior to use in clinical settings. Course includes the reinforcement of previously learned skills. Skills used by the vocational nurse working with the adult/geriatric and mental health client in settings such as: hospitals, team leading in skilled nursing/rehabilitation, community based: ambulatory clinics, home care, and other ancillary health care settings are integrated skills such as trach care, complex wound care, ambulatory clinic and home care skills, supervision and leadership and IV (intravenous) therapy within VN (Vocational Nursing) scope are demonstrated.

Course Completion of NRV 51 and Course Completion of NRV 58A and Course Completion of NRV 51L and Concurrent Enrollment in NRV 52.1 and Concurrent Enrollment in NRV 52.2 and Concurrent Enrollment in NRV 52.2L

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Incorporate theoretical principles from advanced medical surgical nursing and concepts related to mental health in NRV 53 as well as concepts learned from NRV 51, NRV 52.1 and NRV 52.2 to demonstrate the planning and implementation of more advanced medical surgical, community based health care and team leading skills for the adult/geriatric and mental health clients.  
2.Use anatomical landmarks to perform physical assessments and implement therapeutic procedures for adult, adult/geriatric and mental health clients.
3. Demonstrate an ability to perform selected advanced vocational nursing skills in a simulated clinical setting (laboratory) which is consistent with theoretical knowledge base and common standards of practice.
4. Perform skills utilizing a team approach and demonstrate professional behaviors and accountability.
5. Demonstrate psychomotor competency in the performance of selected advanced skills.
6. Communicate therapeutically with adult/geriatric and mental health clients.
7. Teach self-care skills to patients.
8. Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions on adult/geriatric and mental health clients.
9. Work cooperatively as a team member/leader to ensure that all members achieve learning objectives.
10. Adapt procedures to meet patients' needs.

1. Application of advanced medical surgical skills and concepts in the adult/geriatric and mental health client population in a variety of clinical settings:
   a) Community based
   b) Acute care
2.Using advanced medical skills in the nursing process:
    a) Assessment
    b) Planning
    c) Implementation
     d) Client evaluation
3. Use of anatomical landmarks and demonstration of psychomotor competency with adult/geriatric and mental health clients.
4. Therapeutic communication regarding:
    a) Shift reports
    b) Physician orders
    c) Educating client on self-care
    d) Documentation in skills portfolio
    e) Ambulatory/home health care
5. Applying skills as a team leader/member in health care settings, including delegation of personnel.
6. Collaborative leadership skills in:
     a) Managing a group of clients
     b) Administering medications to a group of clients
     c) Delegating tasks to non-licensed personnel
     d) Transcribing orders and shift reports
7. Application of advanced medical surgical skills:
      a) Fluid and Electrolytes:
         I. IV (intravenous) site care.
         II.Monitoring (drip factors) in IV's.   
      b) Procedures:
         I. Sterile wound irrigations and packing.
         II. Wound drainage.
         III.Bladder irrigations.
         IV.Tracheostomy care.
         V. Chest tubes (monitoring and care.
8. EKGs (electrocardiograms) management.
9. Discussion of Code Blue protocols.
