Demonstration and supervised practice of intermediate vocational nursing: adult/geriatric, maternal-child, pediatric skills based on scientific principles and concepts from theory. Concepts related to mental health and growth and development will be integrated into skills. Planning and implementing intermediate adult/geriatric, maternal-child, and pediatric patient care are done in the simulated clinical setting relevant to steps in the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementing, evaluation and documentation. Students will practice and demonstrate skills in the lab setting prior to the assignment of these skills in the clinical setting.

Description:

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Incorporate theoretical principles from the fundamentals/basic medical surgical skills course into the planning and implementation of intermediate nursing skills for adult, maternal-child, and pediatric patients.

2. Use anatomical landmarks to perform physical assessments and implement therapeutic procedures for adult, maternal-child, and pediatric patients.

3. Demonstrate psychomotor competency in the performance of selected intermediate skills.

4. Communicate therapeutically with adult, maternal-child and pediatric patients including those with mental health issues.

5. Teach fundamental self-care skills to patients and parents of pediatric patients.

6. Plan and implement preoperative and postoperative care.

7. Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions on adult, maternal-child, and pediatric patients.

8. Work cooperatively as a team member to ensure that all members achieve learning objectives.

9. Adapt procedures to meet patients' needs.

Topics and Scope

1. Team learning strategies for intermediate vocational nursing skills for adult/gerontologic, maternal child and pediatric patients, including mental health

2. Review and apply principles from the prerequisite courses to adult, maternal child, pediatric skills:

   a. Infection control

   b. Sterile technique

   c. Therapeutic communication

   d.  Assaultive behavior management

   e.  Health care teaching to patients and family

3. Use of anatomical landmarks:

   a. Adults vs. children

   b. In administering injections

   c. In complex dressing changes

   d. In nasogastric intubation

4. Planning and adapting procedures for patients with multiple illnesses:

   a. Positioning

   b. Activity tolerance

   c. Prioritizing

5. Perioperative care:

   a. Patient and parent teaching

   b. Preoperative preparation

   c. Care in the immediate post-operative period

   d. Oral airway, suction Ambu bag (adult/pediatric)

   e. Evaluation

6. Injections/IV (intravenous) Site Care, Blood Transfusions:

   a. Intradermal and Mantoux test interpretation

   a. Nasogastric tube insertion

1. Reading assignments: approximately 20-50 pages per week from skills textbook in preparation of practice.

5. Practice skills as a member of a learning team.

6. Online pre-quizzes and case scenarios.

7. Demonstrate competency with a maximum of three attempts on the skills lab rubric criteria.

Writing: Assessment tools that demonstrate writing skill and/or require students to select, organize and explain ideas in writing.		Writing 0 - 5%
Portfolio for skills and documentation of skills per case scenario.
This is a degree applicable course but assessment tools based on writing are not included because skill demonstrations are more appropriate for this course and this course includes essay exams that fulfil the writing component of the course.
