An introduction to the field of dentistry and the educational requirements, roles and responsibilities of each member of the dental team, including the dentist, registered dental hygienist, and registered dental assistant. Legal and ethical concepts are introduced in this course.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Describe the highlights in the history of dentistry during the early times, renaissance, and early America.
2. Describe the highlights in the history of dental hygiene and dental assisting.
3. Explain the role of Hippocrates in history and the basic premise of the Hippocratic Oath.
4. Identify the individuals credited with being the first dental hygienist and first dental assistant.
5. Describe the role and purposes of the professional associations for dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental assisting.
6. Discuss the role of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association (CODA).
7. Develop a personal concept of professionalism.
8. Identify and describe the scope of practice for the nine specialties of dentistry.
9. Identify and describe the various roles of a dental assistant in a private practice.
10. Identify and explain the roles of a dental hygienist as described in the American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA) Code of Ethics.
11. Explain how the Code of Ethics contributes to the awareness of, and sensitivity to ethical situations in practice.
12. Explain the purpose of the California Dental Practice Act.
13. Describe the responsibilities of the California Dental Board, and its relationship with the Committee on Dental Auxiliaries (COMDA)
14. Describe the roles and responsibilities of the Committee on Dental Auxiliaries (COMDA).
15. Explain the licensing process in California for the registered dental hygienist and registered dental assistant, and describe the license renewal process for each.
16. Name the two types of statutory law and explain how each applies to the practice of dentistry.
17. Give examples of dental hygiene and dental assisting procedures that require direct supervision and those that require only general supervision.
18. Describe the concept and requirements of the informed consent doctrine.  
19. Differentiate between implied consent and informed consent.
20. Describe the reporting responsibilities of the registered dental hygienist and registered dental assistant regarding child and elder abuse.
21. Explain the theory and requirements of  HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)
22. Describe the various types of dental care delivery systems.  
23. Explain the concept of risk management, and describe the most important risk management techniques.
24. Discuss the components of the American With Disabilities Act and how it relates to the practice of dentistry.
25. Describe the laws relating to sexual harassment in the workplace.
