A one-semester clinical course designed to continue the development of dental hygiene skills in preventive therapy, oral prophylaxis, periodontal initial preparation and maintenance therapy. The educational focus is on the refinement of periodontal process skills in scaling and root planing, the application of advanced instrumentation principles, and early self-assessment skills. Techniques in the use and interpretation of radiographs, infection control, and office procedures will continue to be developed. Students will continue to develop clinical skills by working with clients in the Santa Rosa Junior College dental clinic.

Course Completion of DH 71C ( or DH 77) and Concurrent Enrollment in DH 79 and Concurrent Enrollment in DH 80

COURSE CONTENT
Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Apply appropriate medical and dental precautions in patient treatment; determine proper precautionary procedures (including consultation and referral) and apply those procedures during treatment.
2. Apply current emergency procedures whenever necessary for the patient's well-being.
3. Implement infection control procedures as recommended in the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines for Infection Control in Dentistry.
4. Integrate and perform all aspects of dental hygiene care on a variety of patients at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) dental hygiene clinic. Care will include assessment procedures, recording of findings, dental hygiene treatment planning, preventative procedures, therapeutic procedures, adjunct therapies, and follow-up care.
5. Obtain and record patient medical, dental, and dental hygiene histories.
6. Perform and record findings from extra and intraoral examinations.
7. Conduct and perform accurate periodontal and restorative examinations.
8. Set-up and operate the intraoral camera for patient care.
9. Recognize normal and abnormal conditions as viewed on radiographs.
10. Obtain consultation for further medical or dental clarification when indicated.
11. Establish dental hygiene treatment/care plans through the use of case studies.
12. Perform appropriate preventative procedures on a variety of patients.
13. Determine, select, and use the proper instrumentation procedures used in oral prophylaxis procedures, initial periodontal preparation, and periodontal maintenance therapy on patients.
14. Demonstrate the ability to perform instrumentation utilizing ultrasonic scaling devices.
15. Detect and remove plaque, calculus, and altered cementum from unattached tooth surfaces.
16. Perform the following skills: scaling and root planing, gingival curettage, administration of local anesthesia, margination procedures, the placement of occlusal sealants, fluoride therapy, expose and interpret radiographs.
17. Perform dental hygiene services for patients at extramural clinical sites.
18. Demonstrate a high level of professional and ethical conduct with patients, students, faculty, and staff.
19. Demonstrate proficiency in the management of patient care.
