Catalog Description:

Application of skills in the field setting while working on an approved advanced life support ambulance.  Student will demonstrate knowledge and skills related to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, clinical symptoms and diagnosis as they pertain to pre-hospital emergency medical care of the sick and injured. This is the third course designed to give students the field experience required for certification as an EMT-paramedic in California.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Course objectives are written to conform with those standards outlined in

chapter 1260 of the 1992 Statutes of the Health & Safety Code and Title 22

Division 9, Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services of the California

istrative Code. The student will be able to :

1.Demonstrate communication skills needed in the pre-hospital setting,

2.Demonstrate complete patient assessment.

3.Demonstrate all methods of delivering oxygen therapy to patients as it

relates to pre-hospital setting.

4.  Demonstrate ability to establish venous access.

5.  Calculate drug doses and IV drip rates.

6.  Demonstrate administration of chemicals as prescribed.

7.  Demonstrate skills necessary to splint/immobilize all types of soft

   tissue and musculoskeletal injuries.

8.  Demonstrate pre-hospital management of chest trauma.

9.  Demonstrate pre-hospital management of abdominal trauma.

10. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of head & spinal cord injuries.

11. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of a pt. w/multi system trauma.

12. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of a pt. with burns.

13. Recognize normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms.

14. Treat w/ appropriate chemicals abnormal cardiac rhythms

15. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of a patient with a cardiovascular

emergency.

16. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of a patient under the influence

of etoh or other chemical substance.

17. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of genitourinary & reproductive

   emergency.

18. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of a pt with an identified medical

emergency of the endocrine, nervous, gastrointestinal system.

19. Demonstrate proper technique of handling infectious disease issues in

the pre-hospital setting.

20. Demonstrate the assessment and treatment of a pediatric patient in the

pre-hospital setting.

21. Demonstrate assisting a pre-hospital delivery.

22. Demonstrate assessment and treatment of a neonate.

23. Demonstrate pre-hospital management of a patient exhibiting a

behavioral emergency.

Topics and Scope

1.  Practical application of paramedic theory and skills in the field

setting.

2.  Field assessment and management of adult and pediatric patient with

medical/surgical emergencies.

3.  Review of A&P of the adult and pediatric patient.

4.  Field assessment and management of obsetrical patient.

5.  Field assessment & management of adults and pediatrics with cardio

vascular emergencies.

6.  Field management patients experiencing behavioral emergencies.

7.  Analysis & implementation of didactic material with field experience.

8.  Management of interpersonal relationships in the work setting.

9.  Development of problem solving strategies.

Assignments:

Students are given journals that they must enter all patient contacts and

skill demonstrations.  This is reviewed on a regular basis by the instruct

or.  Students are assigned regular working hours (12 - 56 hrs/week) to

conform with their field preceptor's schedule.

Writing: Assessment tools that demonstrate writing skill and/or require students to select, organize and explain ideas in writing.		Writing 0 - 0%
None
This is a degree applicable course but assessment tools based on writing are not included because problem solving assessments and skill demonstrations are more appropriate for this course.
