This course is designed to give an overview of the role of Community Health Outreach Workers and the philosophy of community health work. It will look at how CHWs have contributed to health care in the United States and the world. Discussions with local community health workers and other health professionals, a field trip to a community agency, and four hours of shadowing a Community Health Outreach Worker (CHW) will be included.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
1.  Analyze history, roles, characteristics and responsibilities of
community health workers internationally, nationally and in Sonoma County.
2.  Examine the reasons why respect for diversity and two-way learning
between the community and the outreach worker are at the heart of
community health work.
3.  Identify individual abilities, attitudes, beliefs and values that are
important for CHWs.
4.  Analyze the role of adult learning theory in health behavior change.
5.  Examine the community health network of cooperation and support that
is essential for successful community health work.
6.  Locate five underserved populations in Sonoma County and examine
problems and lack of resources that contribute to their "underserved"
status.
7.  Compare and contrast 15-30 active Sonoma County community health
organizations and their purposes.
8.  Name job titles common to CHWs and compare their job descriptions.
9.  Analyze myths and facts about homelessness.
10. Discuss health crises in the United States and their impact on Sonoma
County health.
11. Contrast primary and preventive health care.
12. Describe two ways CHWs have contributed to the delivery of primary and
preventive health care in the United States.
13. Explain the importance of identification of community resources for
CHWs.
14. Describe 3-5 situations in community health work where knowledge of
medical terminology and anatomy would be valuable.
15. Decide if community health work is right for you, describing necessary
skills, opportunities for externship work, and further education and
advancement possibilities in related health fields.

Assignments:

1.  Selected readings, 10-20 pages each week. Students will use Internet
to find, examine and compare articles with different perspectives on the
history of CHWs and tasks CHWs perform. They will critique, analyze, and
write responses regarding the articles on a variety of community health
issues.
2.  Written assignments will include 10-15 total pages on articles related
to community health workers, shadowing and volunteer experience, adult
learning theory applications and agency visitation - including critical
thinking and problem-solving exercises.
3.  Four-hour shadowing and volunteer experience with Sonoma County
community health workers. Students will write a 3-4 page paper to describe
the agency, community served, and their experiences.
4.  Make, practice with, and memorize 20-30 medical terminology flash
cards.
5.  In three paragraphs, respond to a community health worker scenario to
demonstrate critical-thinking & problem-solving techniques used in CHW.
6.   Write a community field trip reaction paper.
7.   Quizzes (2-4); final exam.
