COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.  Compose a Spanish essay of 400 words on general interest or a societal topic.

2.  Hold a conversation and speak extemporaneously on a wide range of personal topics with few errors of grammar.

3.  Comprehend Spanish spoken naturally on a wide range of common topics.

4.  Demonstrate comprehension of main ideas and specific details of short fiction and non-fiction written in Spanish without a dictionary.

5.  Analyze, discuss and answer questions orally and in writing about short fiction and non-fiction.

6.  Produce most regular and irregular verb conjugations, subject, and object pronouns, present, past, future and conditional verbs.

7.  Produce the subjunctive, both present and imperfect, as well as si clauses in their most common uses.

8.  Produce most everyday Spanish vocabulary, most common idioms and some theme-specific vocabulary (classroom jargon, for example).

9.  Correctly pronounce both familiar and unfamiliar Spanish words.

10. Produce responses that are intelligently conceptualized.

Topics and Scope

1.  Introduction to text-based ancillary materials particularly as they relate to accessing website and CD-Rom resources

2.  Discussion topics in Spanish, such as:

   a.  Nature, the environment, recycling and conservation.

   b.  City life, chores, money and banking and post office.

   c.  Health and well being, exercise and nutrition.

   d.  Professions and occupations, the workplace, and job interviews.

3.  Exposure to a variety of Spanish-language media.

4.  Discussion of current events.

5.  The subjunctive:  verbs of emotion and doubt, with conjunctions, in clauses

6.  "Nosotros" commands

7.  Past participles used as adjectives

8.  Present, past, future and conditional perfect

9.  The present perfect, past perfect, and past subjunctive

10. Si clauses

11. Introduction to literary passages, in original Spanish, by great writers such as Cervantes, Denevi, and Paz

Assignments:

1.  reviewing lesson(s) from the textbook (averaging 15 pages per week)

2.  memorizing vocabulary and verb conjugations (averaging 75 words per week)

3.  completing exercises in textbook and workbook (averaging 20-30 exercises per week)

4.  working in the language laboratory for thirty hours per semester

5.  completing exercises connected to the text's website or a CD-ROM (averaging 20 minutes per week)

6.  reviewing for quizzes and tests (one hour per week)

7.  weekly or bi-weekly quizzes and chapter exams

8.  writing 200-400 word compositions (3-5 per semster)

9.  oral participation, group activities and projects

10. preparing for oral debates on contemporary issues
