Disease recognition, transmission control, hospital sanitation and sterilization procedures. Zoonoses. Awareness and protection. Microbiology of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, chemical disinfectant handling. Basic emergency recognition and care; medical record-keeping.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The student will:
1.  Evaluate different sanitation procedures for effectiveness.
2.  Describe and identify emergency diseases.
3.  Explain how to prevent transmission of infectious diseases from one
animal to the next.
4.  Analyze medical records.
5.  Demonstrate proficiency in proper medical record protocol.
6.  Discuss MSDS and OSHA requirements regarding common disinfectants.
7.  Identify common infectious diseases presented to the small animal
veterinary clinic.
8.  Define control methods of common bacterial, fungal, and viral caused
diseases.
9.  Demonstrate proficiency in the care of emergency patients.
10. Identify potential zoonotic situations.
11. Identify the difference between viral, bacterial, and fungal
infections.
12. Evaluate different sanitation procedures for effectiveness.
