Demonstration and supervised practice of advanced vocational nursing skills of scientific principles & concepts from corequisite theory. Planning & implementing advanced patient care in a simulated clinical setting relevant to steps in the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting. Students will demonstrate competent skills prior to use in clinical settings. Course includes the reinforcement of previously learned skills. Skills such as trach care, complex wound care, leadership & IV therapy within VN scope are demonstrated.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an ability to perform selected advanced vocational nursing
  skills in a simulated clinical setting (laboratory) which is consistent
  with theoretical knowledge base and common standards of practice.
2. Perform skills utilizing a team approach and demonstrate professional
  behaviors and accountability.

Topics and Scope

A.  Fluid and Electrolytes:
   1.  Intravenous therapy.
   2.  IV site care.
   3.  Regulating and monitoring IV's; calculating drip factors.
B.  Procedures:
   1.  Sterile wound irrigations and packing to include: wound drainage
       systems and bladder irrigations.
   2.  Chest tubes (monitoring and care).
   3.  Tracheostomy care.
   4.  Team leading skills (transcribing orders and shift reports).

Assignments:

1.  Attend scheduled demonstration of identified nursing skills.
2.  Practice identified nursing skills in the laboratory.
3.  Safely perform successful check-offs with instructors of identified
   nursing skills through a return demo examination.
4.  Practice utilizing a team approach with different roles being
   accountable for the team's performance.
