Catalog Description:

Demonstration and supervised practice of basic nursing skills based on scientific principles and correlated with concepts from theory. Planning and implementing basic patient care are practiced in a simulated clinical setting. Relationships between these concepts and nursing skills relevant to steps in the nursing process; assessment, planning, implementing, evaluation and documentation are practiced. Students demonstrate competent skill performance in a simulated clinical setting.

Description:

Basic nursing skills based on scientific principles are demonstrated. Skills are correlated with concepts from theory and related to steps in the nursing process. Students practice and perform demonstrations in a simulated setting prior to performing in the clinical setting.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Incorporate theoretical principles from the fundamentals course into

  the planning and implementation of fundamental nursing skills for

  simulated adult patients.

2. Apply infection control principles to the implementation of fundamental

  nursing skills.

3. Use anatomical landmarks to perform physical assessments of simulated

  adult patients.

4. Compare and contrast assessment findings gathered in the examination of

  simulated adult patients with physiologic norms. [emphasis on well

  adults]

5. Demonstrate psychomotor competency in the performance of selected

  fundamental skills.

6. Communicate therapeutically with adult patients.

7. Teach fundamental self-care skills to patients

8. Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions on adult

  patients.

9. Work cooperatively as a member of a team to ensure that all members

  achieve learning objectives

10.Prioritize assessments and interventions for adult patients

  whose problems concern a single acute or sub-acute illness.

4. Practice skills as a member of a learning team, soliciting instructor

  feedback when needed.

5. Assist teammates to achieve learning objectives.

6. Independently demonstrate competent performance of all skills, within a

  maximum of three "checkoff" competency demonstrations.
